Align your essential activities with your organizational core values. Any other activities can be trimmed away. By doing so, you will be inadvertently cutting costs and will be laser-focused on using your energy, resources, and funds to support your core activities.
How do you determine a 'core activity' ? Imagine in the absence of this activity, will your organization still be functional, and stay afloat? If not, then it is an essential aspect of your business. An office, assistant, manager, and foundational team are examples of core elements of your organization.
If you can do away, reduce, and substitute this activity, then it is not a core activity. The annual formal gala can be modified to an informal gathering pot-luck at the picnic. Both events will foster community building and networking, whereas the latter will be significantly less expensive and doable in a time of economic downturn.
When you cut off the unhealthy excess in your organization, you can divert your resources to the essential activities and personnels.
